Ljomi fra Sundsberg, our handsome palmino stallion after Askur fra
Håkansgården under Dama fra Örvik are now in training again at Lian.

He looks good with Sigurstein Sumarlien in the saddle and we plan to show him again this coming summer. Apart from being a true gærdingur with five well separated gaits he has a wonderful character that we want to pass on to some of our offspring.

Update from horses being started at Langholt by Elli and Vidja and up north by Mette (Manseth) and Gisli at Pufum in Skagafjordir.

Brana fra Blesastadir. This beautiful and talented young lady, owned by Birgitta and myself, is now back at Hamarsey after having being started by Elli and Vidja at Langholt. Brana did well at Langholt and is welcomed back to Elli and Vidja for further training in January. She is a powerful lady with  a strong character and very good willingness and movements. Beneath the winter fern and fat she has a strong
conformation, as we could see from the day she was born. She is still
the most beautiful foal I have ever seen and also moving so elegantly
around, we fell in love at first sight....

Röskva fra Saudakroki. Röskva also did great when being started at
Langholt and surprised us all great movements and high action. That she is beautiful with a particularly strong conformation we already new. Her father the young handsome and very talented 5 gaited stallion Hattur fra Pufum seems to throw good gaits. Röskva is also invited back to Langholt for further training in January-a sign of talent and quality in itself.

Hamborg fra Feti. This is the first offspring under Landsmot star
Alaborg fra Feti after the great four gaited stallion the Anvari son
Stigandi fra Leysingjastödum II. Hamborg resembles her mother with lots of natural talent and easy to work with. She will be kept in training at Langholt, hopefully qualifying for Landsmot next summer.

Hugmynd fra Saudakrokir. Hugmynd was started in begin of October by Mette and Gisli and she is doing well, already being under rider
(Gisli). Hopefully Mette and Gisli will take her on and train her aiming
at Landsmot next summer.

VISA FRÅN SUNDSBERG-BLUP 127 -
A RARE TALENT AND CORNERSTONE OF MY FUTURE
BREEDING OUTSIDE ICELAND

Visa fra Sundsberg under the beautiful 1 prize mare Vaka från Österåker and After Isar fra Keldudal became the highest scoring 4 yrs old mare outside Iceland ever this summer at Wången, scoring 8.15 in total!

She is naturally talented in all five gaits and thats very seldom! Her
pedigree is also very strong with Von fra Vindheimum as grandmother and Mökkur fra Varmalaek as grandfather on mothers side. This in combination with one of the most promising young stallions outside Iceland, Isar after Sleipnir cup winner Keilir and under the magnificant Hravn daugther, hounours award winning Isafold fra Keldudal partly explains her sucess. But pedigree doesn't make a horse alone and optimal upbringing (by Birgitta and Rune Ibert)and training (by Vignir Jonasson)is as important for her success.

Visa is now in training by Vignir and we do believe that we are only in the beginning of revealing her true capacity/potential-and if all goes well she will be shown again this coming spring and then taken to Garri fra Reykjavik. Visa is among the  horses with the highest breeding index (Blup 127) and the offspring after her an Garri will most likely receive a Blup of 130 or more. So we have a lot to look forward to....if all goes well...And looking at the strengths (and weaknesses) of these two horses from a genetic standpoint-this combination could hopefully bring the breeding of Icelandic horses a small step forward.

And, as discussed earlier unique talent was seen from the very
beginning..just look at these pictures. Very powerful back step as a
youngster, illustrated with this jump, very wide steps when being
started, natural good form and lot of willingness and power in early
training, but positive to work with and eager to learn and with more
strength comes more speed in gaits and higher action. But still not
strong enough to carry her big movements and thus Vignir keeps her i relatively low form to help her carry it through. He will take her up
and gradually increase speed in gaits and action as she strengthens-this will hopefully materialize next year, becoming a year older and
stronger. But the most important-here we hav a naturally very talented horse-not a mare training product-and that will (hopefully) come through in future offspring as will her very strong pedigree.

October 2009. Our precious mares at Hamarsey are preparing for the
winter, fat and furry!
Mostly Hrodur daugthers; from left is our young palmino Hatid fra Saudakroki (u. Landsmotwinners Hvita Sunna and
Hrodur), second is Sara fra Saudakroki (u. Honors award winning Sunna and Hrodur, 8.25 tot) and third Fregn fra Hamarsey (under Fasta fra Hofi, 8.16 and Sær fra Bakkekoti).

And a picture of another Hrodur daugther: Solkatla fra Hamarsey (u. our precious breeding mare Selma fra Saudakroki 8.10 4g). Hatid and Sara is in for more training by Elli and Vidja at Langholt in January, hopefully to qualify for Landsmot next year. Solkatla is born 09 and Fregn 08, so they are not in for any training soon....

CHARACTER.
Discussion is running on how to best judge the character of a horse. Today "Spirit" and "General impression" are judged but none of them reflect in a good way the true character of a horse -and additionally these scores are rather subjective. And everybody interested in breeding knows how important a horse character is and emphasize it a lot. And many confuse character and willingness. A very willing horse can at the same time have a very positive, cooperative and good character. An good example is Vilmundur fra Feti, Landsmotwinner and star at  Vindheimamelar in 2006. He was named after Brynjar at Feti because of his special character-Brynjars favorite act was to crawl under his feet-and Vilmudur did not mind at all. Also his offspring was very friendly (see picture of me holding one of them at one of my visits at Fet). And Vilmundur was so willing that Þórður Þorgeirsson had
problems with stopping him at the track....

Vilmundurs father Orri, was likewise, very nice to handle, intelligent, fast learning and cooperative-with at the same time a strong positive willingness -a very valuable asset in breeding indeed. One of Orris other sons Álfur frá Selfossi has inherited this same quality and to watch the cooperation between horse and man;Alfur and Elli (at Langholt) is as instructive as it is fascinating. So when you are deciding on a breeding mare or stallion look first and foremost at their character.

These are horses that you are going to work with and handle a lot, including their offspring -so it will "make your days so much easier". And when combining horses, finding the right stallion for your mare or vice versa, think about the character of the horses you combine-good positive willingness is very important but do not "double up" a difficult character (i.e. nervous, moody, aggressive, bad tempered). Often the score board (World Fengur) does not give you a fair assessment of the horses true character-so take the time to ask around and take a closer look at the offspring of the horses you are planning to use with "character" in mind. So its not all about how good they are looking or how high they are lifting their front legs.....

Sept 29, 2009. Röskva is being started by Elli and Vidja at Langholt.
She is under Hervör daugther Sletta fra S after Mette Manseth's young
and promising stallion Hattur fra Pufum. Röskva resembles her father
with a particularly strong conformation and good movements. Proportions
looks good with long legs, high set neck, sloping shoulders, beautiful
head and good hooves so I believe she will score high on conformation.
She will be put in further training in January, after a well deserved rest.

We also have a half sister of Röskva called Hugmynd, same age, under
Saudakrokir's strong breeding mare Vidja fra S, an exciting Otur
daugther. Hugmynd is being started by Mette Manseth October 1'st. Her
conformation is not as good as Röskva's, but we hope she inherits her
mothers extreme riding talent. It also gives us a possibility to compare
Hattur with Mette's other great stallion Hrodur fra Refsstödum. Hrísla
frá Sauðárkróki under Vidja after Hrodur was an exceptionally talented
mare receiving 8.35 first time she was shown as 5 yrs old! So no doubt
Vidja is a strong breeding mare, also being mother to Sónata (8.19) and
Áll (8.20). It will be exciting to follow how these two breeding mare
prospects develop.

Sept 29, 2009. Hamborg is being started by Elli and Vidja at Langholt.
She is the first offspring under Alaborg fra Feti, our most promising
breeding mare (ready early; 8.25 and third at Landsmot in 4 yrs class,
father; best stallion ever, Orri frá Þúfu, and mother one of Fet's best
breeding mares, Ísafold fra Sigríðarstöðum), mother to Ludvig, Arni
Geir, Fantasia +++, all full sisters and brothes of Alaborg.

Hamborg looks good, and she will be put into further training in January
and hopefully shown this coming spring/summer.
Hamborg

Birgitta and Anna visited iceland and Hamarsey mid sept 09 and sent me these beautiful photos of Hervar, our six month old son of Aron, under our 1 prize breeding mare Hrund fra Arbæ. He is big and very well built.

Hrund has give us another amazing stallion prospect after Krakur
callen Hauski -so she looks like a very strong breeder. Hrunds mother

Hrefna's two first offspring is 1 prize. She is after Kraflar and under
Hnota fra Stora Hofi and Hrund father is Sleipnir cup winner Keilir-so
its a lot of Krafla/Kraflar blood in her.

Our breeding mare prospect under Selma and Hrodur also looks good. Selma is one of our most interesting breeding mares with 9 for tölt and spirit/willingness and scoring 8.10 as 4 gaiter only 5 yrs old.

She also has pace, like her full brother the stallion Brjann fra Saudakroki and is well built and has an amazing character (unlike her father the great stallion Odur fra Brun).

Selma is now pregnant with our young stallion prospect Hákon frá Ragnheiðarstöðum (u hatid, a. Alfur)

Our young breeding mare prospect Brana fra Blesastadir is now at
Langholt to be started by Elli and Vidja.

She is fat and happy preparing herself for a long winter....hopefully this will not interfere with the starting process and further training from January.

Birgitta and I own Brana together and we expect a lot from her so I am eager to learn what   Elli and Vidja thinks of her of coarse.

Brana is after Keilir under a interesting Odur daughter Röst fra Hrankelstödum with high action and wide movements and speed in gaits, one of Blesastadir's young breeding

Sept 09. Last week-end I visited Lian where I have two horses; the
stallion Ljomi fra Sundsberg and Litla Mari fra Hakansgården. Ljomi had
three beautiful mare foals this summer and particularely the palmino
under Fegurd fra Lian (mother of one of Norway's most interesting mares
Leira fra Lian with 9 for tölt and lots of top placements in various
competitions with Camilla Haavik in the saddle, see picture of Leira.
Ljomi will be put in training again this winter by Sigursteinn
Sumarlien. He has five clear, good gaits and a fantastic character that
we would like to pass on to more offspring as well as a very storng
pedigre (Askurson under 1 prize Atli daugther).

CONFORMATION

From our own foals there are some good examples of an important quality
in a foal: Being well raised and in good natural form. The first
impression of a horse often comes from meeting it "head to head" seing
its front part (particularly head and neck) and its important to choose
horses that carry themselves well from the very beginning. Some examples
of this among our stallion prospects are Alvar fra Hamarsey, Hervar fra
Hamarsey, Grettir fra Hamarsey, Hauski fra Hamarsey and Hákon frá
Ragnheiðarstöðum).

Hauski well raisedHervar good well set neck
Hakon well raisedAlvar well raised

WELL RAISED IN NATURAL GOOD FORM WITH GOOD NECKS

If you take a closer look at some of our prime breeding mares one will
see that this is a quality that we strongly believe in:

Hátíð frá Úlfsstöðum - IS2001258875 and offspring Hakon and Harka
Hrund frá Árbæ - IS2001286932 and her foals Hauski and Hervar
Gasella frá Garðsá - IS2000265870 and her son Grettir
Álaborg frá Feti - IS2000286904 and her son Alvar and daughter Hamborg

Of coarse we shall not forget the father -and if the property comes from
both, chances are quit good that the offspring will inherit this special
quality. A good example of this is our Garun fra Saudakroki that
presented herself with a conformation score of 8.34 with 9 for neck this
spring. Her mother being the legendary Hervar daughter Gnott fra
Saudakroki with 9.5 for neck and father Gári frá Auðsholtshjáleigu,
known for his strong conformation. So to double up qualities that one
wants to bring through to the offspring rather than always think
complementary ("bring in what they miss") is perhaps a better breeding
strategy if one wants to keep or even improve special qualities.

MOVEMENTS

I always want to have foal pictures of a horse and preferably a film to
better evaluate the movements of a horse. Visa fra Sundsberg is a good
example. She had an amazing powerful back step when she was little with
bouncing movements and lots of speed. Moving around seemed very natural
for her. (see picture of her amazing jumps). Other good examples are my
now 2 yrs old Isadora fra Karlsro with very powerful back step and
extremely well developed to be so young-big and strong and our Gnott fra
Hamarsey (see how far forward she is able to set her back foot).

Then a long period where movements are very hard to evaluate and then 3
yrs period, looking closely again at how they moves in the field and
under rider when started. Good examples are Hamborg fra Feti, Visa fra
Sundsberg and Hatid fra Saudakroki. They all find a natural good form
with good leg action and thus one does not need to "train them into
form"-that is in fact very hard and time consuming. The really good
horses show talent very early also meaning that it takes less training
(time and money!) to     develop properly. Most horses can become quite
good (not excellent) with lots of  (correct) training-but you are not
primarily after a "pure product of training" but natural talent. This
goes for both competition horses and horses for breeding.

Without a strong engine-there will never become a good horse-so look
closely at the back part of a horse, power in the back step and how well
and easy they can but their back legs under themselves. With a good
engine look for the front leg action. The wideness of the step (see
examples from our Hatid fra Ulfsstödum, on of the best tölter in the
world (receiving 10 for tölt), Fróði frá Staðartungu  and Gasella fra
Gardsea ) as well as high leg action (see examples from our foal Gnott
fra Hamarsey (e Stali and Gnipa), Sara fra Saudakroki and Linda fra Feti
as well as the wonderful stallion Alfur fra Selfossi)

Linda well raised, good action wide stepIsadora strong understep
Hatid natural form, big movements

CONFORMATION-WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHEN?

1-3 weeks is in my opinion the best period to get a glance into the
potential in a horse. Its easy to see the skeletal and thus evaluate the
conformation, and also gives you an early glimpse into how they move and
which gaits they prefer. Its also a good time to evaluate character-also
taking into account how the mother reacts....(The mother has natural
instincts to protect her newborn child-so be careful and gentle-Benny
Lindahl has written a very instructive and good book on early handling
of a foal)

I have a picture in my head on how a foal should look like..... and that
is Holmfridur's beautiful picture of the newborn Brana.(see picture
Brana conformation). The Icelandic population agreed with us at a later
stage and chose Brana as foal of the year 2006 (see article). Thanks to
Holmfridur and Magnus for "creating" such a beauty and for trusting us
to buy her.

Brana has long legs, are well raised with a high set, long and slim neck
and sloping winters-with a soft over line. She has big beautifully
opened eyes and a well formed head, well positioned ears and back and
proportions are just perfect. Its pure harmony to look at.

During the first half year Brana's beauty still shined through (see
picture April 07). This is, however, often not the case and it can be
very hard to give fair assessment of a foal at this age. Its much like
our teenagers, growth is uneven and "beauty and harmony"  disappears for
a while. Then, Brana was nothing special to look at (see picture October
07, 1 yr and three month old) for the next two years (!) until she was
three years old, then the beauty "reappeared" (see picture of Brana
three yrs old). A wise horse man once told me to look at my horses at
age 3 weeks, 3 months and 3 yrs-and it turned out to be a good advice
that I try to follow-in between its best to "forget" the horse in the
sense that looks and movements is deceiving and doesn't really tell you
a lot about the quality and potential of the horse.
