Breeding judgment

Hrund fra Árbć is a beautiful, long legged dun offspring of Hrefna fra Árbć. Hrefna is a black beauty considered to be a very promising breeding mare on Iceland. She is out of the well-known  Hnota fra Stóra-Hofi that received an honour award at Landsmot 2006 and under the famous honours award winning stallion Kraflar fra Miđsitju. The mothers side of the pedigree includes well known stallions such as Stígur fra Kjartansstöđum, Náttfari fra Ytra-Dalsgerđi, Sörli fra Sauđárkróki, Hervar fra Sauđárkróki, Gustur fra Sauđárkróki and Hrafn fra Holtsmúla as well as famous breeding mares such as  Terna fra Kirkjubć, Krafla fra Sauđárkróki , Hervör fra Sauđárkróki,  Perla fra Reykjum and Síđa fra Sauđárkróki.

The fathers side of Hrund's pedigree is equally strong. Her father Keilir fra Miđsitju won the Sleipnir cup at Landsmot 2006, given to the stallion with the highest breeding value score in a Landsmot year and considered a great honour. Keilir is out of the famous breeding mare Krafla fra Sauđárkróki and after the famous stallion Ófeigur fra Flugumýri that received honours awards in 1990. Other famous stallions in the close pedigree are Kolskeggur fra Flugumýri (father of Ofeigur), Gustur fra Sauđárkróki and  Sörli fra Sauđárkróki with an equally impressive line of excellent breeding mares behind him; Perla fra Reykjum Fluga fra Sauđárkróki and Síđa fra Sauđárkróki .

Thus, Hrund's father Keilir represent the best of the Sauđárkróki and Hornafjörđur lines and her mother Hrefna combine the best out of  Sauđárkróki and Kirkjubć lines all starting with the famous and heavily in-bred Svađastađir mare Ragnars-Brúnka fra Saudakroki 2719.

Hrund has inherited the dun colour from Keilir that has received it from Ofeigur, being homozygous for dun due to heavily inbreeding and thus passing it on to all his offspring. I bought Hrund just before she was presented the first time and unfortunately she was rather unprepared (fat with lack of mussels) at the time. Still she received a first prize (much thanks to Stebbi's excellent riding skills) and qualified for Landsmot 2006 and thus showed her true talent. Unfortunately she injured her foot a few days before Landsmot and was not able to attend. She was thus put into breeding immediately and her first stallion carefully chosen; The Orri son Vilmundur fra Feti, who won the 5 year class at the same Landsmot (2006), receiving close to 9 for riding abilities, becoming one of the Landsmot “star”, was chosen for her.

Hrund is very friendly, willing but easy to handle and all five gaits comes easy with big movements and high action, a true gaeđingur. There is extraordinary riding qualities

on both the fathers side (Keilir: 8.77, Ofeigur:8.52, Krafla: 8.51, Perla: 8.33, Gustur: 8.3, Fluga: 8.68) and the mothers side (Kraflar: 8.4, Hervar: 8.58, Krafla 8.51, Perla: 8.33, Hervör: 8.32, Sörli: 8.28, Nattfari 9.08  and Hravn 8.72), so  this should not come as a surprise. I have great expectations for my first breeding mare Hrund.

She will be kept on Iceland, giving access to their many talented stallions. I expect her to become no less than one of the best breeding mares on Iceland, but there is nothing like a guaranty and time will have to show.

Finally, big thanks to my good Swedish friend Birgitta Ibert, who found Hrund for me and has continued to follow her up like “her own daughter”.
Birgitta owns Hrunds brother - the famous stallion Isar from Keldudal-so she certainly takes good care of her family!
